Northeast Floods Kill 1, Affect 150.000
Heavy monsoon rains have caused the mighty Brahmaputra River to overflow its banks and submerge scores of villages in India’s rural northeastern state of Assam.
“At least 150,000 people have been affected by heavy floods in three districts of northern Assam,” said District magistrate Anwaruddin Chowdhury.
Chowdhury said one person died after he was swept away by the strong current while trying to rescue his cattle.
Rice, lentils and salt are distributed by a number of relief agencies to tens of thousands of people in temporary shelters set up in schools, offices and other government buildings.
