Anbar provincial councilman Saadoun said the five policemen were ambushed as they were guarding the main highway that links Iraq with neighboring Syria and Jordan.
Saadoun says the attackers were insurgents disguised as police officers and driving a stolen police vehicle.
A policeman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information, says the attack occurred around 5:00 a.m.
