In front of his mother's grave, he shot himself. At about 07.45 am he was rushed to the Quirino Hospital to revive him. Earlier, Reyes suffered stroke on the alleged AFP financial irregularities and he could no longer stand this kind of smear campaigns against his name and family.
In an interview by Philippine Daily Inquirer, he told that he could do nothing that could besmirch the name of his good mother. The Secretary of Health Enrique Ona said that Reyes died from gunshot wound to the heart and he was proclaimed dead on arrival at the hospital.
