Barack Obama challenged Egypt to begin the process of transition to a new leadership, maybe a new regime.
Earlier this week, Hosni Mubarak had already declared that he would step down until the next elections. Later on, they had a 30-minute phone conversation with Obama. Then, Obama went to television to respond. Obama mentioned about the need for a change in Egypt and said:
"Indeed, all of us who are privileged to serve in positions of political power do so at the will of our people."
"Through thousands of years, Egypt has known many moments of transformation; the voices of the Egyptian people tell us that this is one of the moments, this is one of those times," he continued.
Obama also found the protesters very passionate and dignified and he congratulated the Egypt army for their utmost efforts to keep the peace. He told that there could be worse days in Egypt and asked for calm.
As officials also stated Obama is well aware of Mubarak's situation and just wants him to make a dignified farewell.
